Trump Is Trying to Memory-Hole One of the Most Important Historical Images of Slavery
"President Donald Trump complained of a "widespread effort to rewrite our Nation's history, replacing objective facts with a distorted narrative driven by ideology rather than truth." He directed the interior secretary to "determine" if "public monuments, memorials, statues, markers, or similar properties" of the government had been "changed to perpetuate"
"Last week, Trump quietly followed through on this threat, ordering the secretary of the Department of the Interior to remove from national parks references to slavery, artifacts connected with slavery, and other aspects of American history that the president apparently does not like or understand. The Washington Post reported that Trump's order would change signage and information at the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, various Civil War battlefields, and other historic sites."
An executive order titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" directed the interior secretary to review whether government monuments and markers have been changed to perpetuate false or partisan histories. The order demanded national parks remove descriptions that inappropriately disparage Americans and instead emphasize achievements and the landscape's grandeur. The administration ordered removal of references to slavery, artifacts related to slavery, and related historical content from national parks. The order targets Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Civil War battlefields such as Bull Run/Manassas, and other historic sites, where signs referencing racial discrimination and hostility toward formerly enslaved people would be altered.
