Hundreds of thousands of federal workers faced furloughs or layoffs as funding lapsed. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer accused Republicans of trying to bully Democrats by refusing to negotiate extensions for healthcare benefits and other priorities. Senate majority leader John Thune said Republicans would not be held hostage by Democratic demands. Former president Donald Trump warned he would have to lay off federal workers and linked the dispute to immigration and social issues. Senate Republicans scheduled another round of votes on the two funding bills to give Democrats an opportunity to change their minds.
