Larry Hoover, a former gang leader of the Gangster Disciples, had his federal sentence commuted by President Trump. This decision comes while Hoover serves a 200-year state sentence for murder. Hoover's lawyers claim that this commutation is a recognition of his personal growth and rehabilitation, which they assert the courts have ignored. Despite the positive news of his federal sentence, the commutation does not affect his state prison term, meaning Hoover continues to serve time for serious crimes committed decades ago.
In a two-page order issued on Wednesday, the Trump administration commuted his federal sentence, considering it served with no further fines, restitution, probation or other conditions and ordering his immediate release.
Lawyers Jennifer Bonjean and Justin Moore said in a statement: 'The Courts have demonstrated a complete unwillingness to consider Mr Hoover's considerable growth and complete rehabilitation.'
Lobbying for Hoover's pardon has mounted since Trump appointed Alice Johnson as his pardon tsar in February this year. Johnson was a non-violent drug offender and was sentenced to life in prison.
