Analyzing the 6 players joining the Nationals system after the MiLB Rule 5 Draft
"Griff McGarry was the major prize for the Washington Nationals in the Rule 5 Draft, but the team took six other players in the Minor League phase of the draft, most of whom were pitchers. After missing badly with their selection of Evan Reifert in last year's Rule 5 Draft, hopefully McGarry will be a key piece moving forward. First, the team took right-handed multi-inning reliever Sandy Gaston from the Angels."
"Gaston, the soon-to-be 24-year-old signed out of Cuba by the Rays in 2018, was the 18th-ranked international prospect by MLB Pipeline that year. His story is similar to Griff McGarry's: a big 70-grade fastball that made him the Rays' 13th-ranked prospect in 2022, but extremely spotty command that caused him to fall off top prospect charts. In Gaston's case, he's been plagued by injuries, and he made just 11 appearances at Advanced-A Bowling Green in 2024 before being released."
The Nationals selected Griff McGarry in the Rule 5 Draft and added six additional Minor League-phase players, primarily pitchers, to increase organizational pitching depth. Sandy Gaston, a right-handed multi-inning reliever signed out of Cuba, features a 70-grade fastball but has struggled with spotty command and injury issues that limited him to 11 Advanced-A appearances in 2024. Gaston spent 2025 in the Angels system, made two Triple-A Salt Lake appearances, elected free agency, then re-signed and now gets another opportunity to advance past A+. Brady Hill, a 25-year-old right-hander, struck out over 30% of batters in 41 Class-A Fresno appearances despite a 6.11 ERA. Dylan Tebrake posted strong college numbers at Creighton but has been hampered by continuous injuries that limited him to fewer than 40 appearances.
