Number of women in tech roles up by 1%, says BCS | Computer Weekly
"The number of women in technology roles increased by 1% last year, according to research from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. The professional body's Gender diversity in the tech sector report 2025 found there are currently 441,000 women in tech roles in the UK, making up 22% of the total IT workforce. This represents slow growth, having increased by just 3% over the past five years."
"The lack of women in the technology sector has been a long-term issue, and where women are coming into the sector, retaining them is another hurdle. This is particularly concerning when the pace of AI growth is leaving many behind, and where the teams developing technology such as AI are not diverse, the probability of the technology being built with bias increases."
There are currently 441,000 women in UK technology roles, representing 22% of the IT workforce and a 1% increase over the past year. Growth has been slow, rising only 3% in five years, leaving a shortfall of roughly 530,000 women needed to reflect the wider working population. Retention remains a major issue, with the Lovelace report estimating 40,000–60,000 women leave digital roles annually. Slow progress risks undermining the UK’s ability to fully utilise AI under the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and increases the chance of biased technology when development teams lack diversity.
