Sold-out Twickenham cements UK's place as global home of women's sport
"This Rugby World Cup didn't just pass the total tournament attendance set in New Zealand back in 2021, it tripled it. More than 440,000 tickets were sold, which was 100,000 more than the organisers' target for the competition. There will be more than 80,000 at Twickenham for the final. Canada v England will not just be the best-attended match in women's rugby, but one of the biggest crowds in the history of women's sport."
"No other nation buys more sports event tickets per head than the UK, says Esther Britten, who is the head of major events at UK Sport. I think people have a huge desire to experience that joy, and to feel that smile on their face, and do it while actually feeling safe and included at stadiums. There is also no doubt that women's sport is growing a new audience."
UK venues will host a run of major women's sporting events over the next decade, including the Women's T20 World Cup and the Tour de France Femmes Grand Depart, with bids for World Athletics, the Netball World Cup and the 2035 Women's Football World Cup. The Women's Rugby World Cup sold more than 440,000 tickets, tripling 2021 attendance and exceeding targets, with over 80,000 expected at the Twickenham final. British public turnout for mega-events remains strong, with the UK buying more sports event tickets per head than any other nation. Women's sport is attracting new audiences, with 30% of attendees first-time rugby spectators.
