New research from Walbrook Institute London reveals a significant gap between interest and confidence among young women considering careers in tech. Although 70% expressed interest in STEM fields, 72% felt unprepared academically, and many voiced concerns about workload and support. Overcoming these barriers is crucial as most young women want to succeed in tech but need assurance that these paths are achievable. The presence of male role models further complicates this, as 38% reported feeling unsupported, highlighting the need for a stronger support system to inspire confidence in women pursuing STEM.
The data shows that the majority are interested in the topics, they just need to know that these courses and careers can work for them.
While it's good to see that most of the young women surveyed did know someone working in STEM, these results also show some invisible barriers.
