Two men, Fanyue Gong (Tom Gong), 43, of Brooklyn, and Benlin Yuan, 58, of Mississauga, were accused of participating in a sophisticated smuggling network that moved advanced GPUs to China and other restricted locations. U.S. authorities detained the pair in Operation Gatekeeper, which seized more than $50 million in GPUs. The accused allegedly conspired with employees of a Hong Kong logistics company and a China-based AI firm to circumvent U.S. export controls. Earlier, Houston resident Alan Hao Hsu and his company pleaded guilty after exporting or attempting to export about $160 million in export-controlled Nvidia H100 and H200 Tensor GPUs. U.S. prosecutors framed the seizures as protecting America’s technological edge, while a Chinese embassy spokesperson emphasized that Chinese citizens abroad must abide by local laws and that China protects their legitimate rights.
