Recent torrential rains have led to devastating floods in Niger state, Nigeria, claiming over 100 lives and leaving many missing. The town of Mokwa was severely affected, with local authorities reporting that 115 bodies have been recovered, with expectations of more to come as rescue efforts continue. Over 3,000 houses have been submerged, exacerbating the ongoing crisis in a region already challenged by severe rainfall this season. This incident highlights Nigeria's vulnerability to flooding, particularly during the rainy season, with previous floods causing significant agricultural damage in the state.
We have so far recovered 115 bodies and more are expected to be recovered because the flood came from far distance and washed people into the River Niger.
The state has been prone to flooding in recent times. In April, water released from one of the dams destroyed more than 5,000 farms in 30 communities, including in Mokwa.
