DRC: Is Kabila's death sentence a threat to stability? DW 10/01/2025
"We are very concerned about the sentencing of [Joseph Kabila] by the military court,"
"This could end the process of peacefully resolving the country's political and security crisis."
"We regret that our government is not weighing the consequences of the important decisions that are currently being taken in Kinshasa,"
"This is a sham trial announced by the institutions of a dictatorial regime,"
A military court in the DRC convicted former President Joseph Kabila in absentia of treason and war crimes, including murder, sexual assault, torture, and insurrection. Kabila was sentenced to death and ordered to pay approximately $33 billion in damages to the state and to the eastern provinces of North and South Kivu. The court accused Kabila of backing the M23 rebel group, which has seized control of large parts of eastern Kivu and established its own administrations. Incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi publicly accused Kabila of masterminding M23, which Kabila denies. Supporters say the ruling is politically motivated and warn it could derail peace efforts and undermine diplomatic attempts to resolve the conflict that has raged since 2022.
