Follow the path of exiles': Maria Corina Machado's US-aided escape from Venezuela
"This week, the opposition leader Maria Corina Machado got a taste of that perilous journey herself, as the Nobel laureate began her surreptitious 5,500-mile-plus odyssey from her authoritarian homeland to Norway to collect her peace prize. US officials say the 58-year-old politician slipped out of Venezuela on Tuesday, secretly travelling to Curacao, a former Dutch colony that remains part of the kingdom of the Netherlands, by boat before continuing her voyage by plane."
"Her journey was delayed for several hours due to bad weather and rough seas, reported Bloomberg, which said Machado had been aided by the Trump administration as well as rogue members of the Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro's regime. So many people risked their lives in order for me to arrive in Oslo and I'm very grateful to them, Machado told the chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Jrgen Watne Frydnes, by phone on Wednesday before boarding a Norway-bound flight."
Thousands of Venezuelans have risked dangerous sea crossings from Falcón state toward Aruba and Curaçao in rickety yolas, with many dying when vessels capsized or struck rocks. Maria Corina Machado undertook a clandestine maritime escape from Venezuela, slipping out by boat to Curaçao and then flying to Norway to collect a Nobel peace prize. Her voyage was delayed by bad weather and rough seas. US officials say she received assistance from US sources and rogue members of Nicolás Maduro's regime. Details of the route were tightly guarded and her arrival in Oslo prompted public speculation about her exact exit.
