"History will only be kind to witnesses. In Gaza, it will remember the name of Anas al-Sharif, a young Al Jazeera reporter killed on 10 August 2025. It will also remember the 222 other Palestinian journalists murdered in the past two years by the Israeli army, according to the International Federation of Journalists' own monitoring. But those who chose to eliminate these media workers will remain condemned forever."

Anas al-Sharif, a young Al Jazeera reporter, was killed on 10 August 2025. Two hundred twenty-two other Palestinian journalists were murdered in the past two years by the Israeli army, according to IFJ monitoring. For 24 months Gaza has been the most dangerous place to practise journalism. Israel prohibits foreign journalists from entering, leaving reporting to Palestinian reporters, almost all members of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate affiliated to the IFJ. Many work without protection or refuge for their families and are directly targeted. The IFJ records no comparable death toll in its history. The killings and exclusion amount to a strategy to silence witnesses and control the narrative as recolonisation is promised.
