An international arrest warrant was issued for former President Juan Orlando Hernandez amid a closely fought election. Attorney General Johel Antonio Zelaya instructed the Agencia Tecnica de Investigacion Criminal and urged Interpol to carry out the warrant. Hernandez was released from a 45-year US prison sentence after a presidential pardon and remains in the United States for safety reasons, according to his wife. Hernandez was extradited in 2022, convicted by New York prosecutors for drug- and weapons-related offences and accused of using the presidency to enable large-scale cocaine trafficking to the United States. Domestic investigations have also targeted current and former politicians.
