"Prison authorities didn't take her condition seriously despite repeated visits to the health center and even accused her of indulging in drug abuse,"
"instead of providing appropriate care, prison doctors accused her of 'malingering' and prescribed only sedatives and psychiatric medication. The neglect worsened her condition, leading to seizures and eventual coma."
"had epilepsy, had constant seizures, and suffered from severe headaches, and that every time she went to the prison doctor, she was told she was malnourished and was sent back to the ward."
Somayeh Rashidi, 42, suffered seizures on September 15 and died ten days later while detained at Qarchak Prison south of Tehran. Mizan, the Iranian judiciary news agency, reported a prior history of seizures and said she was first treated by prison medical staff then transferred to Mofateh Hospital in Varamin. Cellmates and rights groups allege repeated delays, minimization of symptoms, accusations of drug abuse, prescription of sedatives and psychiatric drugs, and failure to provide timely care, which they say led to seizures and coma. Rights organizations report family pressure about cause of death and call for Qarchak's closure.
