Jake McCarthy adds another medal to Irish haul at World Rowing Championships as he picks up bronze in Shanghai
"Jake McCarthy kept the medals coming for Ireland at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai. The 28-year-old matched the bronze medal won by his twin, Fintan, on Friday in the double with a well-judged performance in the lightweight single sculls final. In very high temperatures, Turkey's Halil Kaan Koroglu set a blistering early pace, but the eventual medal winners kept their cool."
""First medal on the world stage, so I'm hugely delighted," McCarthy told World Rowing. "It was a tough one, it was kind of different to other regattas in that it was more trying to handle the heat as well as everything else. Luckily I had such a good support staff this year that helped me out giving me all the tips. I probably pestered them a lot with all the questions. But luckily was able to get a medal in the end. So, delighted.""
Jake McCarthy won bronze in the lightweight single sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, matching the bronze his twin Fintan won in the double. Turkey's Halil Kaan Koroglu led early in very high temperatures, but Felipe Kluver Ferreira sprinted to gold for Uruguay, Julian Schoeberl took silver and McCarthy claimed bronze from an outside lane. McCarthy overcame a run of injuries with strong support from his team. Siobhán McCrohan finished fourth in the lightweight single. Michelle Sechser won the women's lightweight single, with Pan Dandan second and Kenia Lechuga third. Tiarnán O'Donnell and Sadhbh Ní Laoghaire placed third in the PR2 Mixed Double B Final; Uzbekistan won that event while maintaining over 40 strokes per minute. Ireland had potential further medals with Fiona Murtagh entered in the women's single sculls final.
