"Serbia's authoritarian ruler has threatened reprisals after protesters and a prosecutor thwarted plans for a Trump Tower in Belgrade. In a rare setback for the Trump family's global moneymaking campaign, the $500m development was abandoned after Monday's indictment of a Serbian minister on suspicion of abusing his office to support the project. We have lost an exceptional investment, Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia's embattled president, said on Tuesday."
"A spokesperson for Affinity Partners, an investment company run by Trump's son-in-law and diplomatic envoy, Jared Kushner, which was developing the buildings alongside the Trump Organization, said: Because meaningful projects should unite rather than divide, and out of respect for the people of Serbia and the City of Belgrade, we are withdrawing our application and stepping aside at this time."
Serbia abandoned a proposed $500m Trump Tower in Belgrade after protesters and a prosecutor halted the project following an indictment of a Serbian minister on suspicion of abusing his office to support the development. President Aleksandar Vucic called the loss an exceptional investment and vowed to hold accountable those he blamed. Vucic, closely aligned with Vladimir Putin, had courted the Trumps. Thousands protested at a historically resonant, long-protected site. Affinity Partners, led by Jared Kushner, withdrew its application out of respect for the people and city. The Trump family's international deals have significantly increased their income, provoking pay-to-play allegations.
