"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it."
"I regret not helping the children. Their screams were harrowing and I can still hear them when I think back to that day. I consider that I should have called police earlier. In hindsight, I wish I had done and it's something that I do think about every day, what I should have done and how this is my fault because I drove him there."
The Independent covers reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech and sends reporters to developing stories without paywalls, asking for donations to fund on-the-ground journalism. Donations are presented as a way to keep journalists reporting for all audiences and to avoid locking content behind paywalls. In the Southport case, taxi driver Gary Poland drove Axel Rudakubana to the Hart Space and did not call emergency services until 50 minutes after hearing screams, having picked up another fare first. Poland threatened to call police when Rudakubana refused to pay, assumed Rudakubana was going to get money, and now expresses deep regret for not helping the children and for feeling personally responsible.
