Uganda: Yoweri Museveni eyes more years in the presidency DW 09/23/2025
"For millions of Ugandans under 40, Yoweri Museveni is the only president they have ever known. And that's unlikely to change soon, as he prepares for yet another campaign after the Ugandan electoral commission confirmed the final list of candidates for the upcoming presidential election next February. Museveni, 81, first came to power in 1986 following an armed rebellion that deposed Milton Obote, and has become one of the world's longest-serving leaders."
"A legacy of stability "Museveni has made a remarkable change in our country and most notably, real peace and stability," says Agnes Atim Apea, a social entrepreneur and politician. She says this stability has spurred economic growth. "That [stability] is really one of the areas the president has evidently invested in. It has triggered all the developmental changes that you see in the country, because without peace and stability, you can't do the roads, you can't do the electricity," she said."
Yoweri Museveni has led Uganda since 1986 after an armed rebellion and will run again in the upcoming presidential election. His lengthy rule is associated with peace, stability, and infrastructure investments that supporters tie to economic growth. Critics cite democratic backsliding, human rights violations, and entrenched corruption under his tenure. Many Ugandans under 40 have only known Museveni as president and some view his legacy positively. The economy has shown mixed growth, with agriculture remaining central and diversifying beyond coffee, and national debates continue over oil prospects and broader development priorities.
