Abdoulaye Diop met with Nick Checker to chart a new course in relations between Mali and the United States, with Washington reaffirming respect for Mali's sovereignty. Coups between 2020 and 2023 removed elected presidents in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, prompting previous US restrictions on military cooperation. US Africa envoy Massad Boulos said democracy is "appreciated" but no longer a criterion for breaking ties. Critics cite the prolonged detention of deposed Niger President Mohamed Bazoum and warn human rights are being sidelined. The US says it seeks to correct "past policy missteps" amid growing Russian influence and regional realignments away from France and other Western partners.
