Trump in China
"Iran: Trump will ask Xi to persuade Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Xi's administration has prodded Iranian officials to negotiate with the U.S., but Beijing sees the war as Washington's problem."
Six weeks after postponing a summit with Xi Jinping due to the war in Iran, the meeting begins with both leaders under pressure. China relies on the Persian Gulf for more than 30 percent of its oil, and the cutoff raises energy prices and slows economic growth. The summit is therefore marked by limited optimism for major economic agreements or resolution of differences. Smaller Asian nations worry that the two dominant powers appear hobbled and may not deliver outcomes. Trump seeks expanded Chinese purchases of American soybeans, beef, and Boeing airplanes, while Xi likely requests extending the prior trade truce and allowing more imports of AI computer chips. The agenda also includes Taiwan, with China pressing for opposition to independence and reduced U.S. arms sales, and Iran, with Trump asking China to persuade Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
