Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication that is FDA approved for the treatment of seizure disorders and postherpetic neuralgia-a chronic, often debilitating, nerve pain syndrome often linked to shingles. It is classified as an anticonvulsant and a GABA analogue, meaning it mimics the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which normally reduces nerve excitability.

Long-term coffee drinking may be associated with a lower risk of developing dementia and more favorable cognitive health outcomes, according to a long-running analysis involving more than 130,000 people. The study, published online Feb. 9 in JAMA, found that among both men and women, people in the highest quartile of caffeinated coffee consumption (2-3 cups per day or more) had an 18% lower risk of dementia compared with those who reported little or no caffeinated coffee consumption.

A groundbreaking study found that adults who sit for 10 or more hours daily face a significantly higher risk of dementia compared to those who sit less. The research, which tracked over 50,000 adults using wearable devices, revealed that the risk increases dramatically after crossing that 10-hour threshold.

They think in terms of birthdays, knowing that the more candles on the cake, the more we should anticipate things like joint pain, lines on the face and even foggy thinking. Yet the most recent research shows us that we have the story all wrong around brain health. The brain changes we associate with aging (for example, memory loss) are far more dynamic and modifiable through the choices we make each day than people realize.

I was lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, spending a year between college and medical school working as a singing waiter in a restaurant called the Hollywood Savoy in the 2nd arrondissement.
