After record-breaking rains, an ancient lake in Death Valley national park that had vanished has returned to view. The temporary lake, known informally as Lake Manly, has appeared once more at the bottom of Badwater Basin, which sits 282ft beneath sea level, in California. The basin is the lowest point in North America, according to the National Park Service. Repeated storms from September through November filled the flat with runoff, forming a thin layer of water.

Spain's Mediterranean holiday islands of Ibiza and Formentera emerged relatively unscathed from torrential rainfall on Tuesday that triggered floods and prompted the closure of beaches and schools. The downpours came a day after the eastern Valencia region, where more than 200 people died 11 months ago in Spain's deadliest floods in decades, was also placed under the highest weather alert for rain.

The yearly tornado record in North Dakota was shattered in just a few hours as the state experienced an extraordinary weather event. More than 20 tornadoes tore through South Dakota and North Dakota, with the storm system stretching across a 200-mile area, according to the National Weather Service. Since 1995, the annual average for the state was 29 tornadoes, with the peak season occurring in June and July.
