The Healey-Driscoll administration announced Thursday that it would award more than $750,000 in grants to address food insecurity in underserved communities. The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) will award $779,458 in funding to 17 organizations through the state's Urban Agriculture Program (UAP) and the Massachusetts Food Ventures Program (MFVP). The grants support the growth of urban farms, community gardens, and food business operations, the MDAR said in a statement.

Hosted by the Columbia Neighborhood Center with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, the program is open to everyone; proof of income is not required. New families must register on the day of distribution. The distribution uses a farmers' market model; participants park and walk in and should bring reusable bags for produce and a cart for dry and canned goods, eggs, milk and more. Each family will receive about 100 lbs. of food.

In the spirit of giving, affordable housing developer Tredway partnered with City Harvest, New York City's first and largest food rescue organization, to distribute more than 500 turkeys and 7,000 pounds of fresh produce including sweet potatoes, peppers and lemons to families in need at the Sea Park Apartment Community, a three-tower complex in Coney Island, on Nov. 25.

Hani Hammad, an 18-year-old, described his harrowing experience during a chaotic stampede while trying to collect food aid, highlighting the suffocation and panic. He felt he was dying, unable to move amid the frantic crowd as he suffered beneath their feet. He was eventually hospitalized unconscious, placed beside deceased individuals who succumbed to suffocation and gunfire. Hani noted, 'I thought I was one of them,' reflecting on the desperation that drove them to such perilous conditions.

"My work with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has always been rooted in the desire to support those affected by the ongoing war. This volunteer role was always designed to be temporary and has now concluded."
