The six markets overseen by the city's Economic Development Corporation aim to provide access to healthy and affordable groceries for underserved communities, not profit.

"The North Shore of Staten Island is a food desert. There are not a lot of places that have fresh, local vegetables and produce and people were looking for something healthier," said Ilene Pappert, director of the Goodhue Community Center in New Brighton where the distributions take place. "It has become such a community. People are sharing recipes, people are excited about trying new things. And they feel like they were getting their money's worth."

Summer EBT, also known as SUN Bucks, provides a one-time payment of $120 per eligible school-aged child to assist families in purchasing groceries during summer months when school meals are unavailable.

"It's just growing by leaps and bounds. And if this new bill gets passed, which I feel like it probably will, we will probably start doubling even more so."

Mohmaed Saeed, owner of the Dinuba Food Center in Dinuba, CA, provides free food delivery to families worried about immigration enforcement. This effort supports local residents during uncertain times.

This is not a communist country. This is a capitalist country where immigrants came to work and progress, and we are here because we are in disbelief that the government is going to come in and set up bodegas where we're located. That cannot happen.

"These aid points have become death traps. Hunger has been used as a weapon of war since the beginning of the genocide to weaken and control us."

I do worry that this Government is really blase about food and farming, because it cannot envisage a circumstance where there is even a moderate disruption of UK accessibility to core foods, particularly carbohydrates.
