I live in Los Angeles, work in the entertainment industry when I'm not moonlighting as a semi-reputable journalist and have done my fair share of lying or, more accurately, omitting the truth. One of the least pleasant experiences in town is being asked to give honest feedback to someone who is at best an acquaintance. It's worse yet if that person is a friend, lover or family member who actually takes your opinion seriously.
In the world of business, integrity is everything. There has to be a baseline level of trust, or the entire system collapses. That's why I make honesty a top priority in my professional life, even in situations where bending the truth a little would be to my personal benefit. For example, I would never misrepresent my level of expertise when applying for a job, even if I needed the work to keep my family from going hungry.
You're not wrong to feel irritated, but I think you may be irritated about the wrong thing. The issue isn't that they're not legally married-it's that they weren't upfront about it. If they'd said, "We're having a commitment ceremony to celebrate our partnership, and we'd love for you to join us," you could have decided whether to attend and give a gift. Instead, they let everyone assume it was a legal marriage, which feels deceptive.
Creating a standout résumé or cover letter is your first (and sometimes only) chance to make a strong impression with prospective employers-to really sell yourself. But there's a caveat, HR experts say: don't sound desperate. Or worse, they could think you're overrepresenting your credentials.
A recent Economist/YouGov poll indicates that only 31 percent of Americans view Donald Trump as "honest and trustworthy," reflecting a significant decline in perceived integrity since the start of his second term. With 53 percent believing he is not honest, the findings highlight widespread doubts about his credibility and bolster claims of dishonesty among the electorate.
