When New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion, the elegant 18th-century house long associated with New York's political elite on Manhattan's Upper East Side in January, he will leave behind the rather more modest, rent-controlled Queens apartment he has lived in for several years. For a democratic socialist who has been elected by New Yorkers on a housing justice ticket, the contrast may seem striking to observers.

In their contributions, the authors touch on a wide range of topics, including the need to connect land justice with broader struggles for liberation, the role foundations and faith-based institutions (like the Roman Catholic Church) can play to leverage their own assets to contain speculation, how community-based institutions like cooperatives and community land trusts can help align land uses with human values, the value of member education and leadership development, and the need to push back against mainstream models of individual land ownership.

"Good Cause Eviction is a powerful tool to prevent evictions and price-gouging, but only if tenants know they have rights," Joel Stillman, director of JustFix, said.
