San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini shed his non-contact jersey for Wednesday's practice, taking the next step in his recovery from an undisclosed illness and opening the possibility of him playing in one of the team's final two preseason games. Celebrini skated in an orange non-contact jersey on Tuesday and has, in recent days, remained out of the team's most physical drills.
At times you can't get out of yourself," he said. "All I know is, ever since I started this, to play hard, play both ends. There's a lot of people in the league that play one side, whether it's offense or defense. A lot of times for me, my mentality is to do whatever it takes to win. For all of my career, it's been having to do both.
The news from the doctors was jarring: Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.'s back was effectively broken. In the best-case scenario, a stint on injured reserve seemed inevitable. At worst, his entire season was in jeopardy. But Pittman's reaction to that 2024 injury was not what one might expect. After learning from physicians that he could play through the low-back fracture if he could tolerate the acute pain, Pittman decided to give it a go.
"Yeah, it sucked, but it was part of it," he said. "Stay positive. And I knew I was eventually going to come back, so I just had to stay with it."
The U.S.'s Jim Walmsley arrives at the 2025 Trail World Championships Long Trail after a summer slowed by injury but with a win at OCC just a month before race day. In the following interview, Jim talks about his recovery since OCC, the injury that took him out of the Western States 100 earlier this year, what he thinks about the Trail World Championships course, and his motivations for racing.
For the Toronto Blue Jays, things haven't gone too well ever since Bo Bichette went down with a knee injury in the series against the New York Yankees over two weeks ago. The Blue Jays have struggled without their star shortstop, going just 7-6 in his absence. In particular, the Jays' offense has gone cold this past week, with only 11 runs scored in their past six games while trying to desperately clinch a postseason berth.
Scarlett Espinoza was just getting serious about the gym when an accident set her back. She was practicing handstands at home in Miami, fell, and broke her ankle in three places. It took her months to relearn how to walk. Espinoza, 38, was frustrated by how challenging even basic tasks were - and nervous about losing her stride. Seeing her parents aging had gotten her thinking more seriously about longevity.
The Phillies have been without ace right-hander Zack Wheeler in their rotation since August 15, and late last month it was announced that he had been recommended for surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. Today, the Phillies revealed to reporters (including Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic) that Wheeler is set to go under the knife on September 23. At the time of the club's original announcement about Wheeler needing surgery, it was suggested that the procedure typically came with a 6-8 month recovery timeline.
Tom Bischof is participating in segments of team training and working to get ready for the Hamburger SV match this weekend after undergoing an appendectomy. That untimely ailment probably came at the worst time for the former Hoffenheim star, though, as Kicker (via @iMiaSanMia) is reporting that Bischof will not be in consideration for a starting role...yet: Tom Bischof is expected to make his comeback in the squad against HSV on Saturday.
For the first time in nearly a year, he feels completely healthy. He wears his normal size 11 cleats, no more steel plate lining the bottom, no more padded insoles, no more toe and foot pain. He thinks about his late grandmothers, two women he calls his "why," and readies himself. It is finally time to show what made the 5-foot-9, 205-pound Durham the top high school running back in his class in Texas: his blend of strength, ability to change direction and speed.
Bryce Elder is coming off two starts where he hasn't been victimized at all by HR/FB, so he's up to 0.4 fWAR after sitting at a flat zero before then. So, there's hope for pretty much anyone. But this isn't really a question about Elder. Michael Harris II will presumably avoid the worst self-slash-team-inflicted slump of all time next year (but maybe not).
Edman's positional versatility was one of the factors that drew the Dodgers' interest and prompted their involvement in what became a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox last year. However, lingering right ankle trouble has limited Edman's time in center field this season. He largely played second base to begin the year before the Dodgers felt comfortable enough Edman's ankle could withstand the demands of roaming the outfield.
There was an enormous amount of concern when Brown got carted off the practice field at mandatory minicamp. The Commanders didn't officially disclose the issue, but they treated the Ohio State product with extreme caution over training camp. Brown didn't get any reps during the preseason, which wasn't a great shock in the circumstances. However, the fact that he looked explosive and sharp during an on-field workout before Washington's final warmup game against the Baltimore Ravens represented a positive step in the right direction.
"You get into that mindset where nothing comes between what it takes to win," she told BBC Radio 5 Live's Women's Football Weekly podcast. "It's like an engine, you just keep going. "When the season ended, when you finally allow yourself to relax it hits you and I was like, 'I just need to take a minute otherwise I am on the verge of a breakdown'. "For the first time in a long time I figured out where I was at mentally and I couldn't even think about the Euros. That was a big indicator that I needed to back off a little bit and just breathe. For the first time I made a decision for me and not to please other people."
McCullers has returned to the big leagues this year after two completely lost seasons. He didn't pitch at all in 2023 or 2024 due to issues with his throwing arm. In 2023, he had surgery to repair his flexor tendon and remove bone spurs from his elbow. The recovery period dragged on longer than expected, preventing him from pitching in 2024. Since a forearm injury limited him to just eight starts in 2022, he had thrown very little over the previous three years.
