Manchester City were close to beating Monaco in the second round of the Champions League group phase, but a late penalty given to the Ligue 1 side, converted by former Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier, snatched two points away from them.
We played a really good game, Guardiola said. In football you have to win with the result. If you analyse the game there were many things that were very good. Step by step we will be better but we had many chances and Phil [Foden] in the first half and many players played really good. We conceded almost nothing. They defended so deep and tight, that is so different to the way Monaco play in Ligue 1, but we played really good. When it's close, you have to defend and we take the point.
Offers had come in, and sources told ESPN that both Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion made loan approaches, but although she wanted to remain closer to home in Manchester, City weren't keen for her to join their rivals and eventually accepted Brighton's offer ahead of deadline day. Kelly didn't want to go to Brighton, however. So, with no movement over a new contract at City and her mental health deteriorating on the sidelines, she took the bold step of speaking out publicly.
"There was no offer. The only thing I do know is that City were looking for a full-back and of course they asked us if Koundé was on the market. And we told them no. So there was no offer or any negotiation."
Man City was so successful in the last eight years not because one captain was really good but because we have a group of great leaders," said Silva. "Obviously as the first captain you have to make sure some things don't happen to create that environment but what we've seen is a group of great characters. "My job now is to create that energy back so people behave right, arrive early to training. "In terms of responsibility you need more than four [captains], we had 10 or 15 players like that who behaved as captains.
Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, these are just some of the Premier League clubs who have benefitted from the fact that Manchester City couldn't provide sufficient game time for some of their academy products to develop properly. City boss Pep Guardiola believes these players would've been starters in his team at this point, had things turned out differently. Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Jeremie Frimpong, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia, Liam Delap, Jadon Sancho...
"First comes the spirit we have shown this week and you have to take care of this like a father and mother takes care of their sons," Guardiola said. "We can be a stable team and step by step when injured players come back we will learn for what we can do better. "Gigi (Gianluigi Donnarumma) will get better and James (Trafford) will get better and the team will grow up."
The 2025 Yashin Trophy has been awarded to Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian is in the running for the Ballon d'Or vote in his own right but following a stunning Treble-winning campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, he has been awarded with the Yashin Trophy, which is given to the best goalkeeper in the world. Donnarumma capped off his summer with a move to Manchester City, yesterday starring for the Sky Blues with a dominant performance in goal in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
She’s really good, said the Arsenal manager, Renee Slegers. She has a growth mindset, so she always wants to learn and wants to get better. But doing those things in your safe environment [at] training where everything is isolated, that's something; coming out into the Women's Super League and doing that on such a high level against top opposition, top players, I'm just so impressed with her. We knew that she could do this and this is the type of player she is.
