Two Israeli soldiers will spend weeks in military prison for the desecration of a Christian object after one stuck a cigarette in the mouth of a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon and the other photographed it. The photo of the soldier, a cigarette dangling from his own mouth, went viral and sparked widespread outrage. It was the latest act by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon to be denounced as anti-Christian.

"The IDF failed in its primary mission on October 7th to protect the civilians of the State of Israel," Zamir said, referring to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). "This is a severe, resounding, systemic failure, relating to decisions and conduct on the eve of the event and during it," he said. "The lessons of that day are numerous and significant, and they must serve as our compass for the future toward which I intend to lead the IDF."
