As the system of governance is a parliamentary democracy, the powers of the Turkish Cypriot "president" are largely limited to managing the negotiations for a settlement of the Cyprus issue the island's division into a Greek Cypriot south and Turkish Cypriot north since the Turkish military intervention of 1974, following intercommunal violence in the 1960s. But the stakes in this election also concern the preservation of the community's character and identity.
