The government has committed to supporting self-build and custom housebuilding through a new £16 billion National Housing Bank, helping individuals and small builders get projects off the ground.

"It's now clear that the bill in its current form will rip the heart out of environmental protections and risks sending nature further into freefall."

The government has admitted that there is very little evidence to support the claim that environmental protections hinder development.

Lawrence Turner warned that if higher planning fees lead to faster decision-making, it is crucial that revenue is ring-fenced for planning services rather than diverted elsewhere.
