What about if you're a sports creator, or the moderator of a deeply NSFW subreddit? What about if you're just a little ol' phone website? Ultimately, everyone has to make those decisions for themselves. But decisions have consequences.
YouTube cofounder Steve Chen is one of the latest tech trailblazers to warn against social media's impact on kids. Chen warned in a talk short-form video "equates to shorter attention spans" and said he wouldn't want his own kids to exclusively consume this type of content. Companies that distribute short-form video (which includes the company he cofounded, YouTube) should add safeguards for younger users, he added.
Deepfakes, threats, doxing (disclosure of personal information), hate speech spread through troll farms and bots, the use of viral hashtags, gender-biased fake news, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate content. The landscape of digital violence against women is increasingly broad and sinister. And although it is on the rise, most Latin American countries lack legal frameworks to protect them from this type of violence, which tends to be minimized despite its serious physical and psychological consequences.
