The cost of putting California's partisan redistricting ballot measure before voters this fall is expected to run the state $282.6 million, eclipsing the final bill of the last statewide special election. As Gov. Gavin Newsom and his allies signed off on Proposition 50 last month a plan to counteract an effort by Texas Republicans to gerrymander the state's congressional maps and pick up GOP seats in the U.S. House the governor vowed to reimburse counties for the hefty costs of an unexpected election.

It's delusional in the extreme to think that investors, even in magical-thinking Silicon Valley, would be willing to put money into a project with absolutely no possibility of being profitable. Public projects are for public benefit, not profits. The central question respecting the high-speed rail now is whether, short of making all the money in the world available to build it, it can be built at all in the current century.

More dead children, dead because they were shot by what we now know is the classic American mass shooter our uniquely native-born young person whose craziness, whose need to destroy, won't be contained because Republican legislators make sure he has access to assault weapons. Going to school has become one of the riskiest things a child can do. Why? Unbelievably, someone in America is today planning an assault on a school district that we won't identify until more children are dead.

Trump's assault on vote by mail and decision to send the military into U.S. cities are evidence of his authoritarian policies, and California must do its part to keep him in check, Newsom said. By deploying federal immigration agents in roving street raids and activating thousands of members of the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., Newsom said, Trump is amassing "a private army for Donald Trump."
