Psychiatric medication overprescribing concerns are valid, but the campaign scapegoats psychiatrists and overlooks broader under-treatment problems.
During the troop surge in Iraq, I learned to constantly scan for threats, how to distinguish the sharp crack of a gunshot pointed in my direction from one outgoing toward an enemy, and the myriad ways that explosives can be hidden on a roadside. I learned that hypervigilance can be the difference between life and death. What I didn't learn was how to turn it off. Now, I take three psychiatric medications every day, and I go to therapy every week.
The 32-year-old, who is facing life behind bars or the death penalty, had been stable on medications for schizoaffective disorder at the time of his medication change, sources told TMZ for the outlet's upcoming documentary on the case. Reiner was diagnosed with the disorder around 2020. Both the bipolar and depressive types of schizoaffective disorders, as identified by the Mayo Clinic, include some schizophrenia symptoms.
