Bill Cassidy faces a tough Louisiana Republican primary after voting to convict Trump in 2021 impeachment.
Trump decided shortly after taking office last year that he wanted to play an active role in primaries, says a person familiar with his thinking. He particularly wanted to endorse vulnerable incumbents early on, figuring the longer he waited, the more it would expose them to damaging primary challenges. But there was a risk: By endorsing candidates just months into his term, Trump gave up a key source of leverage over members whose support he needed to pass critical legislation.
He is a GOAT when it comes to Republican primaries. He's a Tom Brady. He is a Babe Ruth. Trump-backed candidates winning 98% of GOP primaries in 2020, 95% in 2022 and 96% in 2024 across congressional and gubernatorial contests. Even when Trump backs challengers running against incumbents, the analyst added, typically a difficult path in party primaries, those candidates win a majority of the time.
