UC Berkeley student and animal rights activist Zoe Rosenberg was sentenced to 30 days in jail Wednesday afternoon after being convicted of breaking into a Petaluma farm and stealing four chickens in a case that drew international attention. In addition to the time in custody, Rosenberg was sentenced to 60 days served through a jail alternative and ordered to pay restitution, including over $100,000 to Petaluma Poultry.
Police said Taylor Steven Brindley drove his Jeep through a stop sign on Center Road and struck a Ford F-150. The crash severely injured the driver of the Ford and two passengers. Novato police arrested Brindley, then 24, on suspicion of intoxicated driving, reckless driving causing injuries, blowing a stop sign and driving with a suspended license for a prior DUI case. The injured driver, 70-year-old Jimmy Lee Hogges of Novato, died at a hospital the next day.
A former New York state trooper who shot himself on Long Island and then lied about it was sentenced Wednesday to six months in prison and five years probation as part of a plea deal. Thomas Mascia pleaded guilty over the summer to charges of falsely reporting an incident, tampering with physical evidence and official misconduct. As part of his plea deal, he was also ordered to pay $289,511 in restitution. He originally faced up to four years in prison.
