Ruben Amorim's record as United manager is really poor, and it's hard to see him surviving for much longer. The Portuguese tactician impressed at former club Sporting Lisbon, but his lack of Premier League experience is perhaps starting to show as he's struggled to make the step up to such a big job. Iraola, by contrast, has already shown what he can do in the Premier League, and so he might be better suited to what's required at MUFC right now.
Manchester United came into the 2025/26 season with sky-high expectations, heavy summer investment and a fanbase eager for momentum. But while some signings have delivered right away, others have struggled to make the impact expected of them, leading to growing chatter about what works, what doesn't, and who must step up. One player who has still not made an impact at Old Trafford is Joshua Zirkzee, a 36 million signing who has yet to rediscover the touch that made him one of Europe's promising forwards.
"He was offering me a new contract," laughed the former Sporting boss, whose side have managed just one win from four Premier League games this season and been knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two Grimsby. He even managed a joke when the questioning turned around the more serious matter of whether Ratcliffe had suggested he may wish to change the 3-4-2-1 formation Amorim is stubbornly refusing to alter, despite widespread criticism.
He [Ratcliffe] was offering me a new contract, joked Amoim. [No], it's normal things, just to show the support. Explaining that it's a long project. He said many times, this is my third season'. For me it's not. I spoke with him, with Omar, with Jason. Just trying to see all the data around the team. So a normal meeting and we had several, but at this moment it's normal people pay attention to that.
