City Council overrode a mayoral veto to ban ICE from operating on Department of Correction property, including Rikers Island.
San Francisco has been spared the widespread raids and sweeps that ICE agents have conducted in other cities, Milli Atkinson, head of the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative, told a packed house at a panel discussion hosted by Mission Local, on how federal immigration policies have been playing out locally. But, Atkinson continued, "with the money from the 'Big Beautiful Bill,' we expect that is something that could happen here in the future, and we want to be prepared."
On September 11, 2001, blocks away from this courthouse, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in a devastating terrorist attack that destroyed the World Trade Center. In the decades since, New York City has remained a prime target for terrorist attacks, Kaplan wrote. Among the City's foremost targets are its bridges, tunnels, and subway and commuter rail systems. The subways alone have been the subject of at least eight terrorist plots since.
