OpenAI's first hardware release will be a smart speaker with a camera that will probably cost between $200 and $300, according to The Information. The device will be able to recognize things like "items on a nearby table or conversations people are having in the vicinity," The Information says, and it will have a Face ID-like facial recognition system so that people can purchase things. OpenAI acquired Jony Ive's hardware company last May in a deal worth nearly $6.5 billion.
It kind of exists and an in-between of the Echo Dot and the Echo Show. It's small and unobtrusive like the Echo Dot, but features a digital display. It's not a full-on screen like you'd find on the Echo Show in which you can watch videos or flip through photos, but you'll still be able to view helpful information at a glance.
The 2025 Made by Google event featured some well-known stars and highly anticipated devices, but one moment caught my eye more than others. An overproduced video showed Formula 1 driver Lando Norris on a cozy couch talking to Gemini, showcasing what the voice assistant with generative AI can do to replace Google Assistant. To his right, a metal side table held a single thing: an unknown smart speaker through which Norris communicated with Gemini.
