Not unreasonably, Mariam Abdelghaffa had imagined her life as a grandmother would be somewhat different. As it was, on the morning of 11 August, she found herself bent double in a trench, awaiting the next onslaught. It arrived after dawn. She aimed her ancient AK-47 at the pickup trucks racing towards her. Rockets screeched overhead. Suicide drones the size of light aircraft loomed above. Shells rained down.

Islam's* life was changed forever by an air strike in November 2023. The young woman from el-Geneina, Sudan, had been preparing for her exams when a strike landed directly on her family's home. Now, sitting in one of the countless straw structures in a sprawling refugee camp in Adre just over the border in eastern Chad, Islam, 22, sobs as she recalls what happened to her.

The United Arab Emirates is aware of a misleading report published by a non-governmental organisation regarding allegations surrounding the presence of AH-4 howitzer systems in Sudan. The UAE strong rejects the suggestion that it is supplying weaponry to any party involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, Aljaberi said.
