Look east on the night of December 4 and you will see the final supermoon of 2025. Supermoons occur when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth, known as the moon's perigee. The moon then appears up to 10% larger and much brighter than usual. On December 4, 2025, the moon will be around 17,000 miles (around 27,300 kilometers) closer to Earth. This supermoon is also known as a "cold" full moon because it marks the start of colder, darker months ahead.
A supermoon - the closest such moon to the Earth this year - is wreaking havoc with ocean tides up and down the state's coast just as an atmospheric river storm moved through Northern California. The "Beaver Moon" has brought with it king tides. And forecasters say that Southern California could see dangerous rip currents and an increased risk of drowning from large breakers, as well as the chance of coastal flooding over the next two days.
This Wednesday, the closest supermoon of the year will be visible in the night sky. Viewers will have the best chance of seeing the moonrise on Thursday, right after sunset by looking at the horizon. This month's supermoon is one of three occurring this year, the next being Dec. 4. A supermoon occurs when the moon is closer to the Earth than usual, due to its elliptical orbit, which can make it appear larger and brighter in the sky.
The final three full moons of 2025 are all sporting supermoon status thanks to their closer-than-usual proximity to Earth. But November's full moon is the closest one of all, so it's set to be the biggest and brightest lunation of the year. Rising on Nov. 5, the annual full moon in Taurus also serves as this year's Beaver Moon. This lunation is highlighting everyone's desire for creature comforts, but the vibes will be especially cozy for the zodiac signs least affected by November's full moon.
From the beginning of northern lights season to a handful of comets, autumn has been excellent for North American stargazers. The fun will continue into November, with Comet Lemmon continuing to shine after sunset early in the month. Keep an eye on the aurora this November, too. The lights are expected to be exceptionally vivid this fall into winter; visit these aurora getaways to spot them. This is all on top of myriad other interstellar marvels on the horizon, including multiple meteor showers
Gojira is the No. 1 reason to attend the 2025 Aftershock Festival this weekend at Discovery Park in Sacramento. The French quartet, which ranks on the short list of the greatest metal acts of all time, is absolutely sensational in concert and should pretty easily top Korn, Blink-182 and other big-name acts on the Aftershock bill. Yet, Gojira is only one of the many reasons to attend what is most certainly the best metal/hard-rock festival on the West Coast.
On Oct. 5, the cities will fete their very special relationship in a very special way - wistfully gazing at the same moon. It's a Supermoon, to be precise, or a full moon that appears swollen due to its seasonal closeness to earth. As it happens, this month's Supermoon has the charming nickname of " Blood Moon," because it historically appeared at the start of hunting season.
