On Saturday Night Live, Sarah Sherman has played a woman covered in singing meatballs, a Jewish Elvis, and - last week - a drunk raccoon ribbing Colin Jost. But for Squirm-heads, she's in her truest, most delightful form when she's taking us through her own head: talking about some kind of disarmingly nasty body horror, complete with guttural sounds, clad in her famously bright, patterned, clown-adjacent wardrobe.
In the clip, the two actors sit for what appears to be an engagement photo shoot. It seems like they hardly know each other-despite a very funny Zoe Winters insisting otherwise while trying to get them to pose-and uncomfortable around each other. The few glimpses of their eventual wedding seems to be disastrous, with Zendaya's character taking swigs of liquor straight from the bottle and Pattinson's leaving the event with a bloodied face.
The world of "The Chair Company," by contrast, is full of characters who possess their own sparks of Robinsonian madness, their own humiliations and self-defeating obsessions. There is the older colleague who was passed over for Ron's job, played by the veteran "S.N.L." writer Jim Downey: following his non-promotion, he makes it his business to enliven the workplace-first by blowing bubbles with a wand he wears around his neck, then by throwing a party.
One of my latest TV obsessions is HBO Max's The Chair Company. Co-created by Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin (of SNL glory), the quirky comedy thriller stars Tim as Ron Trosper, an endearing dad and property development manager who goes down a deep, deep rabbit hole investigating a wild conspiracy theory about a chair company. Yes, really.
