The magnificent spruce was chopped down in a traditional ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Robert Rigby and the Mayor of Oslo, Anne Lindboe. To make this year's tree more environmentally friendly, a sapling will be planted in its place and the chopped down one will travel part of the way in an electric truck.
Teresa Margolles stated, "We pay this tribute to [Karla La Borrada] and all the other people who were killed for reasons of hate. But, above all, to those who live on, to the new generations who will defend the power to freely choose to live with dignity." This illustrates the artwork's purpose as a memorial and call for respect and understanding towards the trans community.
