Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump ended their mutual attacks on Wednesday after a phone call lasting more than an hour. Upon hanging up, the U.S. president said it had been a great honor to speak with his Colombian counterpart and that he looked forward to welcoming him at the White House, a meeting his advisors are already arranging. Petro responded that Colombia can now sleep peacefully.

Every soldier of Colombia has an order from now on: every commander of the public force who prefers the flag of the US to the flag of Colombia must immediately withdraw from the institution by order of the bases and the troops and mine.

Many federal workers expect not to get paid this Friday, marking the first full paycheck they will miss due to the government shutdown, which began three weeks ago. So far there has been limited economic fallout. But analysts say that the longer the shutdown continues, the bigger the dent it could leave. By law, federal workers are supposed to receive back pay once the shutdown ends, but the White House has attempted to cast doubt on that, NPR's Scott Horsley tells Up First.

Mr Trump, while at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, wrote on his Truth Social platform that Petro is "strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields" across Colombia, which the Republican president spelt as Columbia.

Marco Rubio has recalled John T. McNamara from Colombia for consultations following reprehensible statements from Colombian officials. The U.S. seeks to express its deep concern over the bilateral relationship.
