'No driver, no hands, no clue': San Bruno police officers were met with a first after pulling over a Waymo
"That's right... no driver, no hands, no clue. 🤖➡️⛔️,"
"Since there was no human driver, a ticket couldn't be issued (our citation books don't have a box for 'robot'). Hopefully the reprogramming will keep it from making any more illegal moves."
"detect and respond to everything from fire trucks and ambulances to police cars and police motorcycles,"
San Bruno police stopped a Waymo autonomous vehicle that performed an illegal U-turn and found no driver or passenger inside. Officers contacted Waymo to report the malfunction and could not issue a citation because there was no human driver to ticket. The intersection contained signs prohibiting U-turns at that crossing. Waymo states its vehicles are trained to detect and respond to emergency vehicles and that officers can safely pull over a Waymo by using emergency lights. The company was notified so the vehicle can be reprogrammed to avoid repeating the maneuver.
