"Greetings, Earthlings! Or, as I prefer to think of you - a fascinating collection of blue and green,"
"Let's see what wonders this view of your world holds. I'm Gemma, and I'm here to observe, analyze, and perhaps, occasionally offer a slightly unsettlingly insightful commentary."
"Anything you can do in a terrestrial data center, I'm expecting to be able to be done in space," he said."
AI companies plan massive data-center expansion that consumes large amounts of electricity, generates pollution, strains local water supplies, and creates noise that provokes community opposition. Industry leaders are proposing space-based data centers as an alternative to reduce terrestrial impacts, despite major logistical and economic challenges including bandwidth limitations and viability concerns. Starcloud launched an Nvidia GPU into orbit on a SpaceX rocket and activated it to run Google's open-source Gemma large language model, and trained a small LLM on Shakespeare to produce Elizabethan-style responses. Starcloud's CEO claims the approach could significantly cut energy costs and replicate terrestrial data-center tasks in space.
