The Foster City, California-based company has grown well beyond the confines of Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay since its founding in 2014. Today, Zoox runs hundreds of test vehicles on public roads and private test tracks in Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle. Washington DC will be its eighth test site."
Zoox will begin mapping Washington D.C. by manually driving Toyota Highlanders fitted with its sensors and self-driving software. The company plans to commence tests of autonomous vehicles with human safety operators later this year. Initial testing will use a small fleet that will expand over time. Zoox already runs hundreds of test vehicles across Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle; Washington D.C. will be its eighth test site. The company is developing custom driverless robotaxis without steering wheels or pedals and seeks federal exemptions required to deploy those vehicles commercially.
