""We wanted to bring back its atelier character," says Gary Gautier, the general director of Casa Batlló, which was designated a Unesco World Heritage site in 2005. "We have restored everything that was original, such as the marquetry, while giving the rest a sober, elegant character.""
""Intervening in a Gaudí building is both a dream and an enormous responsibility. Our goal was to create an echo of his work, a whisper that adds to his universe without altering it," says Carlos Dimas, a partner at the studio."
Casa Batlló's second floor will open to visitors in January 2026 as a contemporary art gallery within the Casa Batlló Contemporary programme. The space served as Gaudí's studio and later became apartments, offices and a maintenance workshop that obscured much of the original architecture. Restoration recovered original features such as marquetry and introduced a sober, elegant character. Barcelona studio Mesura redesigned the floor, installing a curved metal ceiling printed with concentric ripples that echo Gaudí's undulating forms. The floor will host two exhibitions per year, accessible via general admission or a standalone ticket, with an inaugural show by UVA and a façade Mapping projection.
