Pirates Sign Manager Don Kelly To Extension
"Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans -- and he has certainly earned mine,"
"Donnie took over the team at a true low point. Since then, we've seen meaningful progress, not just in the clubhouse culture, but on the field. His connection to the community and passion for the franchise make him more than just a manager. He is a Pittsburgher; he is part of our community. He's the right fit, at the right time, and is the right person to lead us forward."
Don Kelly, who became manager in May after Derek Shelton was fired, has been signed to a contract extension and will continue managing the Pittsburgh Pirates beyond the current season. The team had not previously committed past this season despite not labeling Kelly as "interim." Pittsburgh did not disclose the length of the new contract. Chairman and majority owner Bob Nutting praised Kelly for earning respect from players, the front office, and fans, citing meaningful progress in clubhouse culture and on-field performance, as well as Kelly's community connection and passion for the franchise.
