Bostonâs annual Open Streets program is set to return in 2023, featuring five neighborhoods including Mattapan for the first time. The initiative, initiated in 2022, aims to close streets off to vehicle traffic, allowing space for games, biking, and local vendors. Mayor Michelle Wu is a strong supporter, emphasizing the community feedback and benefits. She highlighted the significance of public spaces and the efforts of Shana Bryant Consulting in coordinating events tailored to each neighborhood's culture and needs. The program promotes community engagement and local businesses while transforming streets into vibrant public spaces.
"It's really, in some ways, reminding us about how every space can be a public space," Wu said on "Java with Jimmy."
"They've really been our key partner in making sure that people know about it and that each Open Streets is also tailored to that particular community and the cultures and the organizations and residents that are in the area," Wu said.
